Xenon lamps are special gas discharge lamps that operate on direct current (DC). Inside them, an electric arc passes through two electrodes inside a bulb filled with high-pressure Xenon gas. This process produces an intense and bright light, available immediately upon ignition, similar to natural sunlight.

Thanks to their ability to reignite in any cooling condition and to immediately reach full brightness, Xenon lamps are ideal for many professional applications in various sectors:

  • film projection, for their ability to produce bright, uniform light that faithfully reproduces the colors and details of films;
  • theatrical lighting, for intense, concentrated light that can highlight sets, actors, and props;
  • maritime research, for lighthouses that must project light over long distances;
  • solar simulations, which are essential in various industrial and scientific fields, such as materials research and UV resistance testing of products.

To ensure long life and stable operation, Xenon lamps require constant current and low ripple. For this reason, it is necessary to use specialized ballasts and igniters, which must be compatible with the specific characteristics of the lamps and meet the requirements of the power supply system.

Xenon Lamps: what are they and what are they used for?

IREM power supplies and igniters

IREM ballasts and igniters are designed to ensure the correct operation and long life of Xenon short arc lamps from 150W to 10 kW. Their robustness, reliability and perfect compatibility make them the favorite of manufacturers of Xenon lighting systems.

The AS series igniters, designed to be installed close to the lamp, guarantee immediate and correct ignition in any thermal condition. The ASC series offers additional benefits thanks to the switching technology with electronically controlled high voltage pulses. Ideal for extreme environmental conditions, with an operating range from -40°C to +80°C, this series ensures immediate and silent ignition of Xenon lamps.
