IREM supplies the main components that make a hydroelectric plant capable to work in stand-alone. This type of plant is used where the electrical grid is not present. The generated power will be used by a number of users that are normally near the hydroelectric plant. Traditional application areas are the rural electrification and the electrification of developing countries. In this type of hydroelectric plants is essential to have simple systems: easy to install and requiring really low maintenance.

Stand-alone Hydroelectric Plants: how the IREM system works

The operating principle of IREM components intended for stand-alone hydroelectric plants is based on the so-called “constant load” method. The frequency regulation of the TPS (Pelton Turbine) or TBS (Banki Turbine) turbine generator group is managed by the Electronic Load Regulators (RMP), which dissipate all the energy produced by the machine and not used by the users.
The necessary constant balance between generated power and dissipated power is thus guaranteed, therefore the required generation frequency is guaranteed (50 or 60 Hz according to requirements). No electromechanical turbine automatisms are required, the rapid response times of the regulators guarantee a high level of Power Quality, even in case of instantaneous connection / disconnection of 100% of the load.
As an option, to complete the system, a Distribution Panel (QDM / QDT) can be provided to be installed between the Hydroelectric Turbine and the Electronic Regulators.
This panel allows the electrical connection between the hydroelectric turbine, the electronic regulators and the utilities. It is equipped with the necessary instrumentation to display the electrical parameters of the main plant branches such as frequency, voltage and currents on the generator line and on the line to the users.
A thermal magnetic device towards the output of the utility line also protects the generator from possible short circuits / overloads on the branch of the same.
Upon request, automatic emergency stop systems and / or automatic flow regulation systems can be provided as an option.
